Do you know what picture is this?
And this?
Look at the picture of the place today.
Yes, it is Malioboro, the extremely well-known traditional
market in Indonesia. The first two photos were taken in 1920, almost one decade ago when Indonesia was not this
crowded. You can see how this place has changed a lot from time to time. There
were no numerous sellers and billboards along the street, leaving the place
looks a bit wider and more quiet than now. Most vehicles that passed by were andongs,
bicycles, and maybe one or two motor vehicles which of course do not taking too
much space. It was fairly safe for the pedestrians to walk along the road
without worrying the traffic. The past Malioboro must had fresh and clean air
for there was no abundant of dirty smoke.
Compared to the past time, the nowadays Malioboro has much
more crowded traffic that fulfill the road and even the sideways. The
government changed the two-ways transportation system into one-way to avoid any
traffic jam and accident. There were numerous sellers, bilboards, and buildings
along the street. To sum up, the past Malioboro looked cleaner than today.
